Bordering Pennsylvania to its north and Delaware to its east, Maryland covers an area of 12,000 square miles.

Regarding climate, Maryland has a wide array of climates for a state of its small size, due to local variances in elevation and proximity to water. The eastern half of Maryland lies on the Atlantic Coastal Plain with hot, humid summers and a short, mild to cool winter.

Extreme western Maryland in the higher elevations of Allegany County and Garrett County, lie completely in the subtropical highland and experience milder summers and cool, often snowy winters.
